The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) is the largest energy incentive legislative effort in U.S. history, providing unique opportunities for manufacturers. For the first time, manufacturers can obtain tax credits that can be transferred to an unrelated party for qualifying clean energy or efficiency projects, if the credits are unable to be used internally. These tax credits can total as much as 50% or more of the qualifying project costs.
Additionally, manufacturers may benefit from credits for a planned expansion or reequipping of their facility, as a company manufacturing renewable energy components or equipment that goes into clean energy projects. Certain eligible energy components that are manufactured can earn a direct payment, instead of the tax credit, for each component produced.
